I just received a interesting and polite email from someone at Criterion. He explained that they no longer have the rights to the film, and once their film rights expire, to his knowledge they don't generally seek to reacquire them. However, he did acknowledge the understandable recent interest in the film, so they they are paying attention to our emails.
I don't know what good it would do, but fans of the film might want to consider emailing Criterion. I know it goes without saying, but please keep your emails polite. Also, keep in mind that the people who do currently own the rights understand they have a fairly hot property right now, and the price they'd be asking to lease the DVD rights might just be too high for Criterion.
The email I used was: suggestions"at"criterion"dot"com

I'm wondering if possibly you own or have gotten the chance to view the Italian blu-ray. Like you, I really want to own the film and would love to own Criterion's BD, but since it's OOP I'm looking for the next best alternative.
