wasn't there a sci-fi TV series that was on around 1983 or 1984 that's similar to FJ? i forgot the name but the plot was about a family that accidentally got thru a dimensional portal to strange planet.

You are probably thinking of: "Otherworld" (1985). It is listed on IMDB.com too.
Personally, I think "Otherworld" was better than "The Fantastic Journey", but possabily due to the pryamid portal rather than a Bermuda-Triangle portal. But I like anything with a 'portal' to another world (including "Land Of The Lost"). -

I keep getting this one, and Otherworld mixed up in my head. Whatever one I watched, it was being shown in syndication or something, after The Love Boat and Fantasy Island, on Saturday nights, if I remember right. Used to both love and fear it, as it was pretty freaky.

Since I was older when Otherworld came on, I can recall it a bit better, plus several years ago, Sci Fi did show marathons during the day, and they showed Otherworld, to hilariously campy results.
One episode I do recall involved the kids on this other world singing various pop songs and becoming hits. WEll, no one knew who the Beatles or Elvis or the Jacksons were, so the kids could just sing their little hearts out with all these tunes, and they did, including theme songs to Petticoat Junction and Beverly HIllbillies (they only told this, they didn't sing these on the show).
The only song I recall them singing was Modern Love, by David Bowie.
Well, thats all well and good but the song, Modern Love, was a hit at that time the show was on, so it looked kind of odd for someone to be singing a song we were endlessly hearing on the radio back then, and they acted like it was their hit song, which I guess it was . . . . in this other world.
The authorities on this other world eventually came after the new singing sensation, so the family had to take it on the lam.
Now as for Fantastic Journey, aside from the pilot movie, which I caught probably about just under 20 years ago as a late movie, I'll say, the only episode I can clearly recall was Roddy McDowell's joining episode, where we learned the world he was on was inhabited by robots.
I remember Jared Martin got a love interest and she sacrificed herself to a volcano.
And I remember they all had to confront some fears or something.
The black guy had his hands stuck together and he feared losing the use of his hands.
Ike Eisenmann saw his mother again. He feared never seeing her again.
Jared Martin was falling in a dark pit. I guess that was his fear.
Can't recall McDowell's or the woman's.
I remember th pilot just involved getting rid of all the occupants of the ship except for Eisenmann and the black guy. -
