This movie is great because it does take itself seriously. it really feels like this would happen in real life, government cover ups, people seeing visions they cant explain, using notes instead of actrual language. its not at all like a cheesy action blowem up, its a serious somewhat creepy take on what may actually happen.

I was eight when this was released. Very scary first half, to a kid. You didn't know, if the aliens were friendly or hostile, until the end. But man, it was awesome to be a kid when Close Encounters, Star Wars, Alien, Superman, Body Snatchers 78, Jaws, Orca, Gremlins, Aliens, The Fly 86 were released!!

Spielberg must've immersed himself in UFO lore. Dr Allen Hynek was in the movie, LaCombe's character was based on Jacques Vallee. It's a rumor (or legend)that the ending is based on a landing at Holloman AFB where contact took place.
