THE WORST MOVIE OF 70s!

Actually, the thread title suggests that this is not a fanboy site. If you cannot bear to see a film that is beloved to you held up to the harsh, bright light of cinema critique, then this discussion is not for you. If you feel you can arrange a defense of this film by means of a coherent argument, then by all means go for it.

I watched this movie as a kid, and loved it. I was rooting for the whale all the way.
Its no classic, but it never tries to be. Its just plain emotional fun.
Every now and then, when I feel like it, Ill put the VHS in the machine and watch this litle 1977 gem.

You are being so silly. There were PLENTY of WORSE films of the 70's than poor old 'Orca' was! Get real!

Like, try JAWS II?
Or Humanoids from the Deep?!
Too many BAD movies back then to "worry" about! Just see them in time, whenever!
Other great 70's films to see:
Piranha
Slithis
Grizzly
Its Alive

Good job, flowbeer, I agree with you. I actually love this movie, and "White Buffalo"I thought both were very well-made, and there are certainly worse movies out there from that eraremember "Tentacles", with Shelly Winters and the giant Octopus? Lordy, now THERE'S a bad movie. And I agree with your other reccomendations, alsoand there was also "Day of the Animals", and "The Pack", and so many others.

Yea, some people just like to trash movies to piss people off! I remember Tentacles, as an add, but never saw it! But with Shelly Winters in it, how good can it be?
I think they were running out of underwater 'creatures that kill' ideas! Piranha, Baracuda, Piranha II: The Spawning (flying piranha!).the '70's was also the era of adding "environmentalism" into plot lines, as in "Man is bad and is polluting nature, so Nature will STRIKE BACK against Man!" etc.
Day of the Animals, I think, was blamed on AERESOL SPRAYS! Cut a couple of years later, and you couldn't buy canned deoderant anymore, you could only find Tussy! (LOL, I'm exaggerating to make a point!) That's how damn influential Hollywood was in getting our "awareness" up on "envirnmental issues".
I mentioned 'Slithis'. This flop, like the Humanoids from the Deep creatures, was a big green thing, spawned by "man's radioactive waste"!
There was 'Nightwing', about the Native Americans and how "white man was ruining the land" and so the bats started attacking at night! Wow!
By 1979, there was 'Prophecy', which was about, again, the poor Native Americans, and how BAD "the white man" was for having a logging company, and their polluting the water lead to "deformed" babies and a monster bear that ATTACKS Man (again). I just got this on DVD, it's one of the better of that era.
There were other ones.I'm sure 'The Pack' was based on dogs that went wild by some "government/Army site" or "experiments"! There have been tons of movies, where animals are "engineered" to be "killling machines".it's on the tip of my brainoh yea, Piranha, "the Army" was developing these "weapons" to "kill our enemies" and by pt. II, they "altered" them genetically to FLY! As if they could "command" them to kill specific people! Laughable!

You have not described accurately the movie, The Pack. It was about dogs that were abandoned by vacationers on an island and the dogs turned wild and started attacking animals and people. Good and sad movie.

Orca is NOT that bad, Jenny! There were far-worse movies back then - like TENTACLES? Just read some of our posts below!

Man, flowbeer, you brought up a lot of classics (or at least, what I would consider classics from the '70's)"The Prophecy" was actually a decent flick, although the creature looked like a big bear dipped in raspberry jam. You should check out "The Pack"it actually had a different name when it came out, which I can't remember, but it really was an intense movie. You also have "Squirm" (which I just recently bought and watched, really an interesting movie, to say the least), and "Food of the Gods", and "Empire of the Ants"which again, I just love to watch! Joan Collins is wonderfully bad in that movie, but it's still an effective little sci-fi chiller.

Hey Raymond!
Yea, I love my '70's films, and yes, I think Empire of the Ants was due to 'chemicals' that enhance the ants' size.same with some 90's flops 'Ticks' and 'Mosquito', where the bugs get gigantic! And there was 'Squirm', about crazed worms that eat ppl! Now there's some new 'Squirm' type where they have large worms crawling up a bathtub? Which is the same idea as Cronenberg's 'Shivers' (1975).
Here, look at the title & movie poster:
http://www.imdb.com/board/10073705/
There was also one called 'Parasite' w/ a young Demi Moore, one she ain't too proud of! (I think she bares her t i t s in this one?!) There's another called 'Leeches' , on & on & on.
As for Prophecy (1979) and The Prophecy, I think the latter is the Christopher Walken one from the '90's where he plays the Devil who catches people on fire.NOT the same series!! They only made one Prophecy, w/ Talia Shire & Armand Assante.

Flowbeer, you're amazing!! I cannot believe the results you get when you type in "Prophecy"unbelievable!! I'm also a HUGE David Cronenberg fan, and have seen "Shivers" (or, "They Came from Within"), and "The Brood", and "Rabid", of course, "Scanners", and all of his others. Somehow I don't think the giant bug/creature films of today fair as well as their 70's and 80's counterparts. I just watched "Grizzly" the other nightI was really surprised about the extra footage, that makes it unrated nowpretty gorey in a few scenes, especially when the little boy becomes bearbait. I actually had the good fortune (at least I thought I was lucky!) to see "Parasite" in the movie theatre when it came out, in all of it's 3-D gloryagain, I really kinda' dug that movie, as silly as it was.

Funny, but I have Shivers, Rabid, The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, Crash, that's like 6 off the top that I know I have! And it's funny you saw Parasite in the day, I recall the tv commercials for it, and that was b4 Demi Moore got 'big'! I still think there's a 'bathtub scene' that's very similar to Shivers but I could be wrong. Thing is, Shivers & Rabid are very similar! People go crazy and it's just kind of odd! I wonder if he writes a lot of these screenplays as well?!
You mentioned Grizzly - did you buy it off ebay or has it been released on DVD now? What extras did they add? I coulda sworn I saw the original cut in the day?
