The fact that he secretly called someone meant that
A) he was in on the conspiracy and calling the bad guys.
B) he didn't buy her story and was calling some kind of (medical ?) back-up.
Since the ending rules out A, who do you think he was calling and what for ? A 24-hour shrink ?
I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

None of the above. He explains later on that he was calling Susan's mother because she was worried about Susan.

Lol, wow! I thought Douglas was in on it till that scene. That comment cleared it up as far as his innocence.
