The music and the movie are tied together perfectly. I didn't hear it before I saw the movie, but I will tell you of all the films I've seen, I know exactly where each track is placed in the film scene wise. Unlike other films whose themes are repetitive and you don't know where the music fits into the film, except the beginning and end, you can tell subtle differences where the Hedge theme is different from the backyard scene, etc.

I wonder if someone that has never seen the movies or heard the theme would react say if they were alone at night listening to music and this came on. Would they think it's scary?
I think so, yes. Maybe not
      as
      scary, but certainly unsettling.
I find myself appreciating the theme more as time goes by. Unlike the 80s-ized version used in Halloween II, it's timeless.

I can't think of a scenario where the theme might randomly come on unexpectedly. So it probably would be effective for that reason alone.
If someone was prepared for it I doubt the music would necessarily scare them.

          Gorch,
I remember a few years ago that they played the theme on the radio around Halloween So if a person just happened to hear it what would they think

I think they'd think it was scary. It's meant to be scary. Certainly not a happy tune.

Look it upthey (FLAMING LIPS) did it as a grand opening and it wasn't scary at all in that scenario. I think the original theme is great and scary as hell but I associate it with the movie and seeing it in childhood.

It's spooky to me regardless of it being apart of the film or not.

Before I connected the theme to the movies, my brother was learning to play guitar and he played the theme next to me when I was asleep. Apparently I woke up screaming. I have no memory of this

Yeah i think someone asked this a while back. I remeber answering that my 2 year old (at the time) had never seen this and she was playing around the house, she came to my room when she heard the music and said she was scared.

                                      I'm gonna say yes.
I remember how unnerving this theme was when houses played it for trick-or-treaters on Halloween night. The theme is just perfect, the atmosphere it pulls off with just sound (the sense of urgency, and dread) is incredible.
It wasen't until years later when I finally saw "Halloween" that I realized that that was the origin of the theme.
I had one of those "oooohhhhhhh" moments.

So interesting to hear how the music may have impacted on people who had not yet seen the film. I just can't put myself in that position however hard I imagine. Before I saw the movie, the music wasn't really known or recognized and didn't get played separately. A soundtrack album did not even exist.
When I first saw the the film as a twelve year old in 1981, it didn't hold quite the status and acclaim it does now. It was just regarded as a pretty good, fairly recent horror movie.
However, within the first few seconds, when those piano keys began tinkling with that deep ominous synth backing and that pumpkin gazed at me from the black screen, I knew instantly I would never ever forget the effect of that tune.or the movie as it happened.
It was a very long, frustrating two/three years of searching and waiting for an official soundtrack album to eventually be released.
And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.

I think that the theme can appear non-threatening if you don't know it's a horror theme.
For some reason, my parents' phone has a ringtone similar to the theme. Every time the phone rang, I was feeling a bit uneasy.
However, they didn't know that the ringtone was scary and didn't believe me it was from a horror movie until I showed them.
