I agree, and further - maybe it wasn't intended, but what i got out of this film was commentary on how we(the audience)interpret horror violence similar to the point of the film FUNNY GAMES.
My viewing experience went something like this:
Ah! Martin is one of those immortal, vampires that craves blood? wait could he be just some misguided serial killer rapist that drinks his victims blood? Wait..whats the difference really!? Is there really something Romantic about a vampire? hmmmm
Kind of choppy writing, but I hope you get my point. -

Martin's a great film, right up there with Night and Dawn. To appreciate it, you have to understand that it's deconstructing the legend of the vampire rather than pandering to it and that, in exploring the gulf between reality and fiction, it also slyly deconstructs organized religion. So, comparable, to Night and Dawn, which criticize the sickness of consumerist society and the monsters in us all, Martin criticizes the sickness of religious and mythical ideas that twist our moral codes and make monsters of us (as exemplified by both Martin and Cuda).

- The Dark Half (severely underrated folks)
- Day of the Dead
- Creepshow
- Dairy of the Dead
- The Crazies
- Land of the Dead
Not a bad one of the lot in my opinion, though I must admit those top three are his true masterpieces. I have yet to see Two Evil Eyes or Monkey Shines though.

You are absolutely right. By far the best King adaptation on film, to me.
It would be #4 for me as well, with 'Dawn' first, 'Night' second, and 'Martin' third.
I have never understood the resentment people have toward this beautifully directed movie.

it might just be, although i've only seen martin + the dead films + creepshow. it's better than creepshow, but yeah it may actually be better than all of the original 3 dead movies. I'm not sure - but I was very impressed with it.

This film really sucks, what are you people on about??? It was the worst film that I've seen of Romero's (seen 11, so it doesn't make the top ten)
Anyone who didn't like the 3 Dead films (after Day there were no more, I don't care what anyone says), would be mad to watch a film which combines a main character who can't act, nudity of ugly women, a bad script by Romero and even worse special effects from Savini! -

I agree this is his best film, it's definetly one of my favorites! Night, Dawn, and Day were good too, but i just never could get into them as much maybe cause i'm not a big zombie fan. I also liked Creepshow too, but Martin is in my opinion Romero's best!

Of the eight films of Romero's that I've seen, I guess I'd agree that this is his bestthough I also really enjoyed
Night
,
Dawn
, and
Season of the Witch
. (I need to see
Day
and
The Crazies
again, as I suspect I'd probably like them more now than I remember liking them when I originally saw them.)
What I most like about this film is how dense it is. It's a moving portait of a lonely and disturbed person, an insightful examination of the appeals of horror films (and their mythology), and a compelling depiction of an important period of transition for American society. So there's a lot to think about here, and Romero does a nice job of connecting these various thematic concerns in the film's narrative (e.g. the appeal of horror mythology to both Martin and Cuda does seem connected to how run down and disenchanted their environment is becoming)which still works fine as just a plain-old horror yarn about a psycho killer. -

I like all the movies I have seen by Romero martin is classic and I don't care what people say about diary of the dead its a good movie!!
