In reality, Max was released a couple of years later because his term was up. Hayes had nothing to do with it, as far as I know.
In the film, it was strongly implied that Max wouldn't last much longer in the prison - he was nearly dead when we last saw him. -

John Hurt voiced "UNIVERSE" for ITV or Channel 4 in 1999.
I instantly recognised his voice, and was confirmed right at the creditsI couldnt think of a better person to capture your imagination in the way he does narrating this thought inspiring show.

What I'm wondering is why Hamidou chased Max, then threw him into a wooden pallet, causing it to shatter. My best guess is that Max had just recovered from the severe beating after having been taken out of the prison and didn't want to be in section 13
