The Thing is a great film. There aren't many SF films I would say is better than it.
But Alien is one of them.
My Mt Rushmore of SF films would include Alien, 2001 and Forbidden Planet.
The Thing would be just below that. Along with the original The Thing From Another World, a truly excellent adaptation of Who Goes There?. -

Alien, easily.
Masterpiece of atmosphere and dread, and the various life stages of the creature are brilliantly rendered - egg, face hugger, chestburster, full blown alien - and keep a sense of mystery about what the hell will happen next.
Everything is hostile - space, the planet, the alien, the crew, the android, the company - there’s a deep nihilism at its core, combined with a visual beauty - it’s the ultimate Ridley Scott picture and his best work.
The Thing is fun, more like a comic book with gallons of gore. It’s more of a splatter movie than a tension piece. I enjoy it and admire the effects but I can’t take it very seriously.
The creature is great but its power levels are unclear. Does it assimilate aggressively with tentacles or is ‘one drop’ enough to infect and transform the victim? -
