On this date–25 May–in 1979, Ridley Scott's ALIEN first hit the screen, at, appropriately enough, a midnight showing at the Seattle International Film Festival. The crew of the space tug Nostromo (played by a first-rate cast without a single misstep) investigate a signal from a derelict alien craft and end up hunted by a parasitic, murderous, acid-bleeding xenomorph. Recycling elements from everything from IT! THE THING FROM BEYOND SPACE to Mario Bava's PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES, the film was, nevertheless, revolutionary in its effects, production design, alien, its entire proletarian approach to the genre–a dark, moody, claustrophobic thrill-ride of a horror movie that became a big hit, spawned a franchise (albeit one of mostly unfortunate sequels) that continues to this day and came to be regarded as one of the all-time great horror flicks.

Movie wouldn’t even have existed without the success of Star Wars a couple of years before.
