I thought those movies were fake
For me they were bland .
Of course now that 50 years have passed since cannibal Holocaust was created it's very dated.

You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

I've seen it. A lot of the violence looks pretty fake, honestly (except for a couple of impressive shots) I think the idea of what's happening in the film is more disturbing than what you actually see.
You've probably heard about some of the animal scenes that are real, and those might be tough to sit through. But I remember watching the movie and thinking that people hyped it up to be worse than it actually was.

I had a chance to buy this at a flea market for $1, but I passed. I pondered the idea as it's rare and illegal, I think. I don't think they knew what they were selling. I passed on account of I don't want that movie in my house.
I don't think it's a question of "handling" the gore. It's the fact they really tortured animals to make this.

Next thing you'll know, Luke will be asking if he can handle that movie where Tom Green cuts open a dead deer and uses its carcass as a jacket.

                      You should watch it!
As others have said, the violence against humans is obviously fake. The real animal violence is a lot worse, but it is brief and you can fast forward through it. You can get Blu-ray/DVD versions with the animal scenes removed.
Personally, I really like this film. It is extreme but its still a compelling watch and influential on the 'found footage' genre. Essential for Horror fans or Film Buffs in general. The best of the 80's Cannibal/Jungle Horror movies along with Lenzi's Man from Deep River aka Deep River Savages.

The animal cruelty is appalling but if you can get past that, CH is a top notch horror film and probably the first found footage horror film. It's very intense with some unforgettable scenes and the excellent musical score by Riz Ortolani doesn't get praised enough.
FTR, the director later condemned the needless killing of animals in the film.
