Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Champ

As far as I remember, Champ is the only movie that made me cry. Although I was only around eight years old, the ending made me so emotional that the tears were dripping out of my eyes. The funny thing is, I don't ever cry at the movies.
When Titanic first came out, everyone was telling me how sad of a movie it was. After viewing Titanic, I was awed at the cinematography but not one single drop of tear came out of my eyes. Even a sad melodrama film such as Love Story couldn't move me enough to shed tears.
As other viewers said, I think it's the part where the kid tells champ to wake up. I have not seen this movie since I was eight, but it would be interesting to see what kind of emotional effect it will have on me now.

I remember seeing this as a young lad but I didn't cry at it as I wasn't really paying attention to the film - years later when I watched it again - I literally bawled my eyes out, even an hour after the film had finished!! (Ok so how sad am I to let a film get to me like that?) It was a wonderful film and would love to buy a copy but unfortunatley I've been told it has been deleted. With any luck they will re-release it soon.
I'll trade with anyone who has a jaccuzzi!!!!

To this day, it wasn't the scene at the end of this film that brought me to my knees even though Schroder was very convincing. There were two other scenes; when Voight slaps Ricky in the jail scene was one.. Voight actually slaps Ricky which no one knew he was going to do it. The stunned look on Ricky's face and Voight's anguish were totally genuine. The director contemplated stopping the camer but let it roll and used the scene.
The tear trigger for me was the stadium reunion scene between Voight and Ricky. Just saw this movie after 30 years and STILL bawled my eyes out! No other movie like it before or since.

I remember seeing my mother and grandmother crying at the movie theatre when we were watching the movie, i was around 4 or 5 at that time..I didn't understand it really well but i felt something sad inside me even at that age.
