I love this movie. Yes some effects are cheesy (the splinter hitting the mountain and the avalanche that doesn't blend in with the action), yes there are too many shots of the missiles and meteor but it's still fun and not taken for humor like some movies do.
I liked the effects during the meteor shower over Italy, the subway mud flood and the tidal wave in Hong Kong was kinda cool. -

I still love this movie. It's on Channel 5 on the UK right now, and it's brought back quite a few memories of when I first saw it during my high school days. The acting is poor, otherwise the scripting is good and there's none of that useless celebratory American moments that Armageddon contained (an equally good film).

thsi movie is terrible. terible. i thought the 4.5 outrage was that ti was so high. this movie should be a one. agree with poster who metioned trhe repetetive shots of the missiles in space and the awful stock footage. give me a break.

mistaking the number of asteroids in the asteroid belt by the order of thousands, no time lag in the communication, sounds of explosion in space, the fact that the astronauts and NASA computers couldn't calculate the orbit of a well documented comet and whether or not the comet was going to strike an asteroid
and that's just within the first 5 minutes of this sorry piece of film. -

and yet this is a movie, not discovery documentary or NASA reality show.
c'mon this criticism is just undeserving. this is a good fun film watching with pop corn and soda, not to analyze it until it starts to bleed.
pure ocd should be treated not enforced. -

IMHO the best line was when Sean Connery was leaving the office after being told what, when and how he was getting to D.C. he says "Why don't you stick a broom up my a55 so I can sweep the floor on the way out". PRICELESS!!!

I'm watching this right now having some time to kill and boy this film is hillarious!!! It is a true comedic gem.
One of the first scenes involces NASA contacting a crew in space on the way to Mars (yeah, cold war, space wars, OK) and nasa asks them to investigate a comet, and crew's captain asks "Should we make some pictures?" - this one is awesome, and then it's just getting better.
I seriously recommend it as the as-bad-it's-great category. I'd place it there right along Airports movies of the '70's and such marvels as Manos Hands of Fate.

Yeah I give this a 5 as some of the comments or scenes were unbelievably freakin funny.The 1st 10 minutes cracked me up as you mentioned. The one line by Connery about cleaning the carpet with a broom up his Ass. Mud= Chocolate Milk.
Best quick side shot of survivors in NY tunnel, 2 1970's dressed hookers actually sitting in the tunnel looking bored sh_tless chewing gum!
Priceless! What's the asking price during an Asteroid disaster?

I was going to say the opposite. This film makes Armageddon look like a masterpiece.
There are so many things wrong with it.
They actually use scenes from an even worse disaster film called Avalanche when a splinter hits Italy and snow buries a village.
And Hong Kong is even worse when a 100 foot tidal wave hits. They would have been better off just mentioning these incidents. Hard to believe this was not a made for tv movie.
It is a great cast and a compelling idea but the execution and writing are not very good at all. Add to that completely amateurish effects and the effectively ruins this movie.
Natalie Wood, Sean Connery and Karl Malden all deliver decent performances.
Overall, an uninspiring mess and I can't give it higher than a 4/10.
