It was actually R2D2's job to diagnose the hyperdrive,as proven later in the movie when he got the hyperdrive working.

Incorrect.
3P0 was literally a communications droid, and not only could he converse with practically any living being/computer/droid, it was his actual job
after asking the hyperdrive itself what was wrong, he would have been the one who told R2 what the problem was so he could then repair it
