In the beginning of the film, why is Flash Gordon, star quarterback of the New York Jets, rolling in a station wagon?

It's based on a comic strip from the 1930s. Footballers made very little back then.

Not too sure about the car (good point though) but I remember reading somewhere, may have been the novel, that the shirt was sent to him by a female fan and he wore it in the hopes of meeting her. Never said the movie was well planned out.

IIRC, that is not his station wagon. It belonged to the hotel he was staying at.

Maybe it was a lender from the hotel. But when he leaves the car to get on the plane, he just leaves the window wound down.

I noticed something in the very beginning. When Ming sees our planet and asks its name, he acts like he's neaver heard "Earth" before, yet on one of those switches, he can create "Earthquakes"!

says "Earth" in a derogative way, as if the inhabitants of the planet called it "Dirt".

Back to the comment about Flash rolling up in the station wagon. Maybe he was just a frugal kind of guy. He certainly was not a stuck up country club snob! He was willing to save everyone of us! What a nice guy!
