Filmmaker: Dont you miss making movies at all?
Cimino: You know, I never studied cinema. I never knew how to make a film, and I still dont know.
Filmmaker: Youve made seven films. You must know something.
Cimino: Im quite astonished that I made what I made (laughter). Because, as you must know, my background is architecture, painting, thats where I come from. Im much more intrigued by a good building than by a good movie. Im much more interested in a big bridge or a great new novel or a great painting.

You are the "moron", my friend
This quote only explains why Cimino was a different & sometimes great director:
He had the knowledge, eyes & sensitivity of a fine artist, designer & novelist.
The problem with 90% of the film directors today is, that they only know
      about movies and nothing else.
Cimino was inspired by other art forms and tried new things,
      sometimes with great results.
