They should have made an episode called 'Sam's First Time'.

Really, I think it would have made an interesting episode. A lot of shows were touching on this topic at the time. I think it could have really showed the closeness between Nell and Sam by having Sam confide in Nell about it.

Yeah, but if the episode shows that abstinence is a valid option, creepy guys won't be able to touch themselves while watching an episide about a young girl "loosing" her virginity.
Television writers are stupid and cowardly because we all know that television network sitcom writers owe it to all the creepy, horny guys to write them free fap material. -

I think other shows have done it though. I know Becky on Roseanne lost hers on the show and I might be wrong about this one but I think on Blossom she lost hers too, but like I said I'm not 100% sure on that one but I know her best friend did since she had the pregnancy scare but they never mentioned when she lost it but most shows have the almost thing. I know Family Ties had one where Mallory almost lost hers as well.

I think we have to remember the time this show was written.
It was during the early 80's and an episode about a teen losing her virginity would have been a no-no. Sponsors would have pulled out for sure and the network would have been in deep crap by the SCC.
After the 60's and 70's of "free love", the 80's were the Reagan Years, where 'say no to drugs', AIDS and abstinence were huge.
It wasn't too long ago before this show where a tv character couldn't even use the word, 'Pregnant' before that, it was always referred to as "with child".
Plus, Sam represented childhood innocence which worked against, Katie's more carefree, sexual liberation. -

They already had an episode in which Katie was hospitalized because of an infection caused by an IUD. The father was furious, but it's revealed that the mother had known about it before she died. So that was controversial enough.
But secondly, NO WAY would that have happened with Samantha, because when the show began, Lara Jill Millerthough she was 14 at the timeplayed the girl with the mentality of an 8-year-old. Samantha didn't even know where babies came from. Even when I first watched the showand I am
younger
than she isI found that odd. It was like the Sam was developmentally challenged.
She seemed to have been made more normal a teen after the chief died, and by comparison to the gawdawful Joey; but by the time he was added they were to focused on him to even be bothered writing decent stuff for the girls. Talk about ruining a show. Anyway, the character was far too immature, and it would have been creepy to have her do it.

No argument there. LJM was always adorable. I never blamed her for the lines given her character. One year she did the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade and sang a song for kids on a float with what I think were the Care Bears.
She's actually slightly
older
than Molly Ringwald, and I could totally have seen her having had a film career. She had spunk.
