Way too much danger in 're-doing' it. Best it be re-released.

I really like this film for what it is, but this is one of the few true masterpieces that I would not object to seeing a remake of. If only to improve upon the depiction of what is believed by scientists to have happened in prehistoric times.
I'd love to work on and shoot such a project.

Agreed. This is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time.

I totally agree. I just watched it for about the fifth time (It's now March 2014), and I was even more delighted and admiring of it than upopn previous viewings. It conveys the toughlife that early man had; not just surviving, but communicating and accomplishing things that we consider ridiculously simple. It looked like the original three were late Neanderthals, while Rae Dawn Chong was a completely evolved Homo Sapiens Sapiens. The other "tribes" of cannibals etc. were probably dead-ends on the cladogram that soon died out.
The character arcs were terrific; Ron Perlman was simply magnificent in his ability to personify his character. Funny, vulnerable, conscious and aware of his shortcomings just perfect. Rae Dawn Chong was alwo wonderful in her part, completely credible. As to a remake, I would hate to see that because they would gum it up with "too pretty" actors and actresses, too many gaudy special effects and CGIthey would probably make it fake-bloodier, put in some phony hallucinations for good measure. and altogether ruin it. The simplicity of this version is what makes it so realistic and gives it its authentic look and feel. You can almost feel the cold; th everpresent fear when man was a slow, soft and defenseless prey animal. One of the true masterpieces of film, in my estimation.

There's 2 that come to mind:

                    • AO, the last hunter

                    • Missing link
                      http://www.imdb.com/board/10095646/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4
None of them is of the level of TQfF but both are an interesting watch.

I totally agree and far too long did i have to scroll to see that comment.
Seldom has a movie made me think like that. "What are morals? What is murder? What is rape? What defines humanity and what defines animalhood?", are just some of the questions this film compels the viewer to answer while watching it.
Also, it constitutes great insight into this blurry period of humanity where nature and culture overlap each other, yet commence to differentiate.
All in all, this film contains much more than meets the eye and as such, is indeed a masterpiece in my book. I am shocked by its below-8 rating on here
