I saw Quest the other day and it wasn't the same movie I saw 20 something years ago. The first movie I saw, you actually saw all of the intercourse (penetration), the one I saw the other day was all simulated, you didn't see anything. And, if i remeber correctly there was 2 guerrilas, or animals that look like that, looking on in the sex sceen where it was raining. In the one I recently saw There was 2 guys looking on, Pearlman and another. Maby I'm confusing this movie with another one? if so what was the name of that movie.

      Maybe
The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986)
but it does not show any penetration scenes.

I saw this movie when it came out at the theater as an impressionable 12-year-old and just saw it again last night (having picked it up for $5.99 on DVD!). To me, it's the same movie I saw back then. I do not recall the sex scenes being any different and I am positive the version I saw at the theater in 1981 showed no penetration. I was 12, I'd have remembered that. 😉

I originally saw the movie in Australia and again recently on a DVD sourced from the USA.
I, like the other posters, don't recall any difference in the movie. You may have been watching something else.

The DVD is now rated R13 (viewers over 13 only) in New Zealand, but the film was originally shown in cinemas here with the equivalent of a 'PG' rating and no cuts by the local censors. I'm guessing the theatrical print may have been edited by a distributor if not by the censors. It's hard to believe the uncut version would have got away with a PG rating, especially in New Zealand in the early 1980s.

I remember watching this on video about 10 years ago and I remember a sex scene between Perlman and the girl and a sex scene between the main guy and the girl on a waterfall or something.
I just watched a DVD rip I downloaded and didn't see these scenes.

I found it pretty funny at first, that so much focus in the movie is on sex. When i think about it though, this is absolutely right. Ive lived for too long in a sex hating society so i cant recognize human behavior when i see it.

I saw the movie when it came out, and I was over thirty then. Just watched it again on Cinemax, and it doesn't seem any different than it did then. What I remember best (none of us liked the movie all that much, though it was certainly impressive cinematically, and very well thought out) was commenting that the title really out to be Quest for Missionary Position Sex, since that seemed more the main drive than did the hunt for fire. We also wondered a bit why they presented several different species of hominid (looked like groups of giganticus and erectus) living in such close proximity.

I must agree with ghis I was in my early 20's when Quest first hit the theaters, and I saw it with a few of my shipmates. My recollection is that the intercourse scenes (at least two) were quite explicit - it led to a great deal of joking among our group of sailors.
The first was very early in the film, and featured an explicit rear shot of the female at the river, as seen from the male character's POV. This was followed by Perlman(?) mounting the female, and was equally graphic.
The second one that I can recall was much later, in the hut(?) of Rae Dawn Chong's tribe, where the large female is presented to Perlman's character on her back, and Perlman is clearly confused about what is expected of him until she gets on all fours. I'm less certain of my recollection of explicitness of the scene in the theatric release, but I do recall the cable version cutting away just as she rolled onto her knees, spoiling the 'joke'.
BTW, in response to some other threads on the board, genetic diversity was frequently accomplished in primitive cultures by exchanging the women voluntarily or taking them by force. It stands to reason that a virile male from outside of the gene pool, who clearly possesses sufficient survival characteristics to complete such a journey, would be prized for mating. The fat woman is clearly the senior matriarch (weight is very often an indication of stature in the community - higher position = better fed) and is given primacy. The other women/girls take their place behind her.
I believe there was at least one other explicit scene that appeared to be missing on the cable version, but I'm fuzzy on the details. Likewise, I seem to recall some more explicit cannibalism that was not present in the cable version. But it was a long time ago.
                        Sorry to run long.

Maybe it's 'Caveman (1981)' you saw? Starring Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach.
