Agreed. The subway scene and the ballet scene are very memorable to me. Superb acting from her.

Agreed her performance is incredible. Sam Neill's too, but hers especially.
I feel like a lot of people don't accept acting that isn't confined by realism, even in a movie that isn't confined by realism. It's like how people give Nicolas Cage crap for going over-the-top in certain movies, even though he's explained, he's not concerned about going over-the-top; acting is an artform and like painting there are different styles he's trying to explore.
The performances in Possession are not realistic; they're expressionistic, abstract, and incredible in this way. But people will still see them as 'overacting' or 'chewing the scenery', as if that subway scene for example would have been better (or even existed) with a naturalistic approach. It's sad really; I wish more actors and directors had the bravery to do things like that.

It's so hard to believe people disliked her. After finally getting around to watching this, my first goal is now to find more of her films.

The same here- I'll continue with Roman Polanski's The Tenant.

I was bewitched by her. I'm glad this is the first film I have seen of hers. She and Sam Neill were both incredible together. I've loved Sam Neill a long time but seeing this film was like falling in love with him all over again.

i totally agree, her acting is fantastic, she is giving it 100%, you can not ask anymore from an actress. she is awesome. and "hello" she won the cannes for it. to win that award for a film of this genre is normally unheard of. great acting

I thought at some points she was good but at other times she really overacted and exagerated her emotions. Like that scene where she goes "Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!", just made me feel like she, and by extent the movie, were trying too hard.
Although I am not sure exactly what they were trying.

Zulawski often draws out and gets an outburst of emotion that cannot be contained by regular restrained acting and symbolizes the unbridled fury and explosion of force on the screen.
Speaking as someone who grew up in a similarly hysterical household, it's not far from reality.

I loved her in some of the more subdued scenes, but the extreme onesnot so much. Very loud, and absurdly exaggerated, almost to the point of being ridiculous or self-mocking.
I wouldn't doubt her talent based on this, not at all, but I'd wonder about the director's judgement a bit.

I wanted to like this movie because of the visual look of it and thought the camera angles and movement intrigued me, I figured it'd be not that great but maybe the style could overpower the substance but boy was I wrong. Sitting through this whole movie on TCM one night was like a marathon it was exhausting and not in a good way, in a bored I just want to change it but Ive come this far maybe it will redeem itself in teh end way but nope it never did. Ive seen lots of bad movies and I wont even call this one the worst but I will say its one of the worst times Ive ever had watchng a movie. So so bad, not shocking, not scary, not intriguing, not moving, not anything just sits there for its run time with this idiot running around screaming and flailing and banging bags of groceries around in a subway.
This woman is so bad and while Sam Neil has never been a great actor his acting once he became well known is so much better than this crap that I think its the directors fault. Even the style got old and the constant odd angles and tracking was so overused, this guy watched one too many Kubrick movies and tried to think he could do the same and failed miserably. Kubrick moved the camera and used angles to enhance a scene and he didn't overuse it, he didnt just use it for the sake of "look how clever and artistic I am" like this director. That one scene were they are in that room with the guys at the talbe sitting in chairs and it feels like camera just keeps circling the room for no reason which added absolutely nothing is just one example. This movie was amateur hour and I will never ever watch this draining bore again. I love film but I hate this movie (I wont call it a film because it doesn't deserve the proper term)

Enlighten me oh psuedo-intellectual one, I know what the move TRIED to do but it did it in such a boring way. If anyone likes this movie that is fine I love the Shining and its my favorite movie and some people tell me thats crazy and how boring it was to them so I know everyone has their own taste but this movie is not good IMO. It was poorly executed and the acting was very hard to watch in places too, I did not like it, glad you did but don't tell me I'm "wrong" like you are some end all be all

I can see how some might think some bits were a bit over the top but I think it made sense within the context of the character.

It probably didn't help that director didn't seem to understand that sometimes less is more and let her scenes of screaming and flailing around just go on and on endlessly.
