This and "The Player" are the great Hollyweird black comedies. The dialogue is funny because it is true.
FWIW, the spirit of this movie is being carried on in Showtimes "Episodes" which has no shortage of narcissistic whack-jobs.

In my estimation, S.O.B. isn't embraced by many viewers primairly for two reasons:
The first is, it's a black comedy, and one of the blackest ever made about Hollywood. A lot of people who can giggle and guffaw at Pink Panther movies just don't "get" black comedies, so that portion of the audience is lost right there.
And also, a lot of snobbish, head-in-the-cloud viewers just can't get over the trauma of seeing their ideal of prim and proper femininity, Ms. Julie Andrews, actually affront their eyes by baring her breasts for a (gasp!) comedic effect. What I find hilarious about these objections, though, is that most of them seem to put the blame on her husband for this rather than on Mary Poppins herself (who obviously agreed to do it).
People believe what they want to believe. One term for this is Faith. Another is Delusion. -

Her tits were the most bland, small white woman tits to ever grace the silver screen. It was done purely for comedic effect and not meant to (ahem) titillate.

exactly, no one talks about this fine film. just watched it for the first time last night right after watching the party with Peter Sellers on TCM and it's way better than the party but no one ever talks about this film. this has to be the most underrated film ever made. you know what, until I heard Ben Mancezeictz talk about it last night, presenting it on TCM I never heard anyone talk about it as being good. and even on here it is underrated at only 6.4. it should be at at least 7.0.
