Usually the actor in a "spoof" is no match for the actor who played it serious, but George really nailed the role here. The perfect Zorro.
Loved this movie as a kid and still do. -

He gave five very distinct performances as Diego as Diego, Diego as Zorro, Bunny as Bunny, Bunny as Zorro, and Bunny as Margarita. And they are all very different.
You are absolutely correct. I always thought of this as a duel role but Hamilton's performance makes it much more than that. He is perfect as ALL the characters! -

This is possibly one of the best spoofs in cinematic history with an Oscar-worthy performance By George Hamilton. He literally played 5-6 convincing characters each with their distinct personalities and life. There's possibly few actors that can match Hamilton's caliber of acting.

Most actors are happiest when using props because it gives them something to do. Otherwise they're just standing around and talking. But in this epic comedy George Hamilton has to continually contend with swords, whips, and all manner of costume changes and at least 5 different characterizations complete with differing accents! Not to mention constantly duelling, dancing, leaping, romancing, and making it all look easy. I honestly can't imagine how he accomplished this, nor can I imagine any other actor past or present being able to pull this off. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic I have to say that Hamilton must be an unsung acting genius, and this delightful, even astounding film is one of the greatest comedies ever put on celluloid!
