I think he retired because Rambo destroyed his ego, pride and reputation.

Yes probably retired. More than likely his injuries prevented him from doing his duties further as he may have incurred some extent of disability from the fall and bullet wound(s). Also he most likely came under intense scrutiny after word of how his officers, mainly Galt treated Rambo and he did nothing to stop it. Afterwards he was forced to retire and moved away in disgrace. Whoever the new sheriff is would have a field day rebuilding the departments resources and reputation.

I think he'd probably just continue as is. The town folks didn't know the real story of what happened and I'm pretty sure that Teasle and his men would make sure to keep it that way.
They would probably say to all the news channels that Rambo came to their town,, started making trouble, killed one officer and injured several, caused a lot of damage to properties, and even tried to kill Teasle himself. It was only through his (Teasles') courage and skills that he was able to subdue Rambo and get him arrested and save the whole town.
Knowing Teasle, I get the feeling that that is the story that he would perpetrate, and end up looking like a hero.

Assuming he's not confined to a wheelchair the rest of his life I would guess he retired and decided to do something else with his life. If I went through what he did I would not want my job anymore.
