"They do show the inside of the ship in the 2011 prequel."
—————————————-
In the 2011 Prequel when Mary Elizabeth Winstead is on the spaceship and she sees that Weird TETRIS thing that was moving around, Did you know that that TETRIS thing was actually some of the CGI that they put in late and that it is actually really covering over what was originally there with Practical Effects and that was a dead Pilot-Thing ? -

It's possible that Carpenter did film scenes inside the spaceship.
Back in the 1960s, 70s and 80s there was a horror/science fiction magazine called
Famous Monsters
. As a kid, I had an issue of this magazine that came out around the time The Thing came out.
They had a big article about the film. One of the photos in the article was captioned,
"Inside the alien ship"
or something like that. The photo was kind of vague. It looked like the edge of a round conference table with some kind of screen or instrument on it. There was no real detail you could see.
I wish I still had the magazine and the other issues I had but they are long gone.
I don't know if the magazine had their information wrong or if Carpenter actually did film some scenes in the alien ship. It's been a while since I listened to the DVD commentary with him and Kurt Russell. I don't recall them saying they filmed anything inside the ship.

There was no need.
Plus they had concerns about the weather and getting back while it was still light out.
And you dunno what you are going into.
There might be toxic waste, traps, any dangers.
