Are they only as intelligent as whatever they are copying? Because that wolf seemed smarter than an animal.
But in some instances, it doesn't seem very smart at all. Whenever caught, it just stands there and screams while transforming, sometimes not even attacking. It's very panicky and dumb once identified. -

Not like they ever sat down and played chess with it or gave it a test.
Looks like it mostly just has survival instincts.
Though it did manage to build a ship out of the parts it found at the base.

For the record, the humans are dumber.
Fighting it by blowing everything up which ends any means for survival for the remaining ones who will freeze to death wasn't the best idea.

To be fair, even the smartest humans can panic and act very dumb when their survival is at stake.

It seems to be at its most vulnerable when it's in the middle of replicating. The scene with the dogs was similar. It didn't do much other than howl, and by the time it even tried to escape, it was too late. It got torched again.
I also don't think it can kill humans that easily. It had Windows by the head, and it still took a while for him to die.
