Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Transformers

I remember when watching The Return Of Optimus Prime Part 2 as it first aired. They used the word Hell when they were playing that clip from The Touch after Optimus opened the Matrix.
How did that possibly slip past the editors? Yes, the show was syndicated so the censorship was somewhat more lax. They were even allowed to use the words dead and die in season 3, verboten terms on network kids' programming. Hell is entirely another word altogether. It broaches both swearing and religion. Of course, Transformers had skirted religion before with The God Gambit and got away with it.

I think it works like; Hell when used a synonym for chaos, ie raising Hell, its ok. Hell used as an actual location, like "whoever wrote the script for autobot run can go to hell" not ok. That's just my guess

Hell was also used in an episode of the 1990's Johnny Quest series. I believe it was Dr. Serd who described his life confined to life support as Hell. However, that was on TBS, cable, where the censors might have been a bit more lax.
