Every 6 yrs or so, something brings this film to my attention & I think
Well, I absolutely LOVE his music. I've got to watch that again.
And then I do & I love the film until the point where
I REALIZE THEY'RE GOING TO SPEND AN HOUR SHOWING HIS OPERAS ! ! ! !
His operas are not the cream of his output. Spending so much time on his operas was a huge mistake. I know why they did it. A film is a visual experience & so is an opera, whereas Eine Kleine or a symphony is not. BUt, it was a huge mistake.

I don't care for opera. But the colourful stage stuff was good to watch. I get the feeling that they don't stage opera now as it was originally staged.

"good to watch" in a movie about MOZART, you just damned it with faint praise.
And, I almost agree with you. It WOULD HAVE BEEN good to watch if I could have ignored the reality of Mozart's output & his time.
        A few operas

His operas ABSOLUTELY ARE the cream of his output. This is extremely important. It took me years to understand that, and i used to not like how much screentime is spent on the operas. Mozart himself was most invested in his opera composition and it clearly shows that his most brilliant ideas shine throught there. Please dont tell me you think Eine kleine is an "important" composition. Watch Figaro a few more times before you obsess over his symphonies (of which only the last 4 are truly significant)

It also makes sense because opera composition was the ultimate prestige/genre for a composer in the classical period. Symphonies werent a big deal back then. His 40th & 41st may have never even been played during his lifetime
