Times are different now. The throw away action/comedy film is dead.
It's an 80's vehicle. Treat it as such. This type of film would never be successful now and I think that says more about the audience then the product.
I love this film by the way. -

I agree with jk80, although not the "hugely" part. The plot is very simplistic, the characters are one-dimensional, and only a few of the gags are funny. Yes, I believe this movie reflects its time. Somebody described it as a "throwaway action/comedy". What would have made it into a great cop film for me would have been more gravitylike when Foley and his old friend had that special moment reminiscing about their car-stealing days.

Funny, I just watched it again and found it to be an even better film than when I first saw it. Not sure how one can say it is not funny (the Bronson Pinchot scene is priceless) or awful. This is Eddie Murphy and the action/comedy in top form. A gem.

I completely agree. This movie contains an extremely likeable and personable Eddie Murphy, some good action, a passable bad guy, and a sufficient action/comedy plot.
I just don't get the complaints.
This is supposed to be a fun, light-hearted movie, and it succeeds in all accounts.
Questions for the complainers:
Did you expect a serious drama about the turmoils of cop-life in downtrodden 80s Detroit?
Did you expect some kind of complicated plot twist like The Usual Suspects?
Did you expect Oscar-quality acting?
What, exactly, were you expecting when you rented a movie called Beverly Hills Cop starring comedian Eddie Murphy? -
