The OP is hugely wrong. This movie is hugely UNDERRATED, in my opinion. When you think about it, Eddie Murphy created the modern action hero. There was never a character in action movies who wisecracked and taunted the villain like he does here before this movie. It predates Die Hard and Lethal Weapon and all the other action films that have come after it. Eddie invented an original movie hero and it has been copied so many times that we forget he started it. The gritty look of an urban action film and the quick-witted comedy came together in this film in a way never seen before. I love this film. It still makes me laugh: "Grey hair, very dark complexion, Capricorn. Victor."

At it's core it's a bad movie but made a classic through Murphy's classic improv style and a few other comedic relief moments.
Is that possible?
It would appear so. Brilliant movie IMO. Much better now than when I was a kid.
9/10 for me.

Agreed. I hadn't seen this since I was a kid, I loved the Beverly Hills series then, but when I saw it I really disappointed.

Everyone has their own opinion, but gotta disagree with the OP. This is really one of the best action comedies of the 80's. Eddie Murphy showed a real effortless charm and the screenplay wasn't force fed like the comedies of today.
It remains as entertaining now as it was then. -

Personally I don't think the film is a disappointment but Eddie Murphy could sometimes act too dramtically. In the raid on Victor's house when Alex had shot Zack, he gets up and slowly swaggers towards Zack's body before being shot in the arm by Victor. I felt it was over done and could have toned the drama down a notch.

It '84, it wa great. Eddie Murphy's star was on the rise.
It hasn't held up as good as some of the other movies of that period, like Lethal Weapons or Die Hard. But seeing it in the theater in '84, I thought it was great. -

Well said. My take on its popularity at the time: The civil rights movement was still fresh in people's minds, it was the heyday of the Reagan years, and a movie about a street-smart/smartass black cop running circles around a bunch of buttoned-up white guys was a novel concept at the time. But what made it entertaining then hasn't held up over the years.

Personally, I love the film. Overall, I think the good bits far outweigh the bad bits. During many of the scenes, Eddie Murphy puts a huge grin on my face due to the sheer ridiculousness of his situation and how he handles it all so effortlessly.
The way others are so easily persuaded by Murphy and some actions of certain characters may not be particularly believable, but you're just trying to find reasons not to like the film if those are genuine gripes. If you can't get past such things, films like this just may not be for you. I think it's a fantastically fun film. Not to mention; the soundtrack is pure 80s bliss.
