The mothers friend question

Right before Sam moves in, the mother and her friend are out in the backyard (when Jake overhears them talking) and the friend is trying to tell his mom that she doesn't know anything about Sam, etc. Is this the same friend that later was standing next to her when Jake sees same sniffing cocaine? It doesn't make sense that the friend is questioning Sam but then later on appears to be joining in on the cocaine party.
