Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

How can you make some of the best films of all time and still make trash like this? Because everyone has misses I suppose. I didn't completely hate this movie and there were some parts I like but as soon as I would get drawn in an eye rolling cheesy moment would occur. It was weird how this film couldn't tell if it wanted to be dark or completely comic. Really jarring tone. Oh and here is a drinking game for you. take a shot every time Willy screams (agh so annoying). If you play this gameRIP my friend

Spielberg made the opening very campy and comedic because he was trying to mislead the audience, he wanted to shock them when Indy first gets to the Temple and the audience then realizes how dark and sadistic the movie really is. Temple of Doom is a great movie, not as good as Raiders but definitely better than Crystal Skulls and miles better than that piece of garbage known as Last Crusade. Out the Spielberg movies I've seen this is how I would rank them:

      1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
      2. Schindler's List
      3. Saving Private Ryan
      4. Jurassic Park
      5. Jaws
      6. ET
      7. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
      8. Catch Me If You Can
      9. Hook
      10. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
      11. The Terminal
      12. The Lost World: Jurassic Park
      13. Minority Report
      14. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Very interesting observation and I see your point but dang the tone switch was jarring to me. One extreme to the other. I just thought it was a poor put together movie from tone to story to execution. That being said Crystal Skull was one of the worst movies I've ever set through. Completely horrible. I'd watch Temple 10 times before I'd watch Crystal Skull again. Agh

Also I like your list. Jaws is my favorite Spielberg film. It's just perfect to me. Saving private Ryan is at a very close second. Powerful film. I love Spielberg but he has a few films that I just can't stand.

He gets to the temple nearly halfway through. So that would be more than the beginning.
and then the audience then realize how dark and sadistic the movie really is
That would be a great excuse if the movie then didn't switch back into campy and comedic once Indy comes out of his possession, and we didn't have Willie back to screaming, Short Round beating up the bad guys, supposedly weak child slaves overcoming their captors, and Willie and Short Round acting out Indy's punches.

The entire film is campy and comedic. It never abandons that, not even in the supposedly "dark" moments.

So Pat Roach senselessly beating a young boy with a whip was supposed to be "campy and comedic"? How about Indy and Short Round getting tortured, or people eaten alive by crocodiles, or a dude getting his f-cking heart ripped out.
I agree the opening was pretty campy but it becomes a very adult and very serious film around the 50 minute mark.
Last Crusade however was campy and childish the entire time.

Yay, four things. How about when Short Round frees himself and goes kung-fu fighting on all the baddies? Or when Pat Roach throws the sledge hammer over his shoulder and it hits someone square on his head? Indy and Shorty punching in tandem while Willie is acting out their punches? The roller-coast ride? Shorty driving a car with blocks of wood on his feet to reach the pedals? Shorty ramming that rickshaw? The whole fight scene at the beginning? The dingy scene down the mountain? The dinner scene, the bugs scene, the jungle scene, the water scene, the embarrased-at-having-forgotten-his-gun moment, etc. etc. etc.
Last Crusade however was campy and childish the entire time.
Ok, you used four examples to "prove" that Temple wasn't campy and childish. So I'll use four examples from Crusade:

                    1. German soldier getting crushed under the tank
                    2. Donovan's death scene
                    3. Henry getting shot
                    4. People getting their heads chopped off
                      There. "Proven".

Those are just 4 things I mentioned, how about Indy and Short Round about to be crushed to death by spikes, how about a village starving to death? How about a mother break up into tears as she watches her little boy die in front of her? How about a guy having his bones crushed feet first.
None of the examples you mentioned from Last Crusade count because they were all played for laughs and they were so campy that you can't take them seriously. You never see the German get crushed under the tank, you do however see Pat Roach's guts get smeared all over the wheel, Donovan's death scene I will give you that is the highlight of the film unfortunately it only lasts about 3 seconds and when you compare that to 2 hours of sh!t it doesn't make up for it, Henry getting shot wasn't intense or sad because the guy who shot him gave this very silly speech about "bedtime stories" and the film didn't take it seriously, the people getting their heads chopped off was also play for laughs.
Sorry but Temple was a mature adult film and Crusade was a kiddie film for preschoolers.

                        1. The spike trap scene was pretty funny, actually. There was a spike trap scene in Goonies as well; probably inspired by the one in Temple.
                        2. What about Indy's father getting shot and almost bleeding to death, with even Elsa expressing despair and anguish? Indy's mortal fear as he braves the trials for his father's sake?
                        3. The guy having his bones crushed feet first is something you thought was funny, you sick bastard.
None of the examples you mentioned from Last Crusade count because they were all played for laughs and they were so campy that you can't take them seriously.
What is the matter with you?
                          None
of them were made for laughs. Not remotely. How do you expect me to believe such a ridiculous claim when it is
                          so
ridiculous you obviously don't even believe it yourself?
You never see the German get crushed under the tank, you do however see Pat Roach's guts get smeared all over the wheel
You do not see the German crushed under the tank, no - but you don't see Pat Roach crushed, either. And no, you don't see his guts. You see a stripe of blood.
Henry getting shot wasn't intense or sad because the guy who shot him gave this very silly speech about "bedtime stories"
The "bedtime story" dialogue was in the beginning of the film, when Donovan was presented to us as a pleasant and sympathetic person. And he said "bedtime story" in quotes, I don't know why you should latch on to that any more than Indy mentioning the bogey man in Raiders.
and the film didn't take it seriously
You base that on what, exactly?
the people getting their heads chopped off was also play for laughs.
I'm not surprised you think so seeing as you think Pat Roach being crushed in Temple was also an example of "dark humour". What I would like to point out to you, however, is that if you think one is "mature" because it was dark but the other "juvenile" because it was humour, then you are a textbook example of a hypocrite. In reality, of course, neither were attempts at humour, and pretty much only a boy in his early teens would find them funny. Both scenes were serious, and dark. The Temple one moreso than the Crusade one, but neither death contained even an ounce of humour.
Sorry but Temple was a mature adult film and Crusade was a kiddie film for preschoolers.
Sorry, but Temple was a kiddie film and Crusade was a family film. Temple of Doom mature? That's a laugh.

Yes, all very adult and serious

The voodoo doll was a mature theme, Willie's reaction to the temple was completely understandable considering she had never been in such a situation, don't see a problem with the lava not melting metal, this is the same franchise where a box of sand melted people's faces (not to mention the fact that India isn't volcanicly active so therefore the lava had to have been created from black magic), the Thuggees were attacked by hundreds of kids it makes sense that they would overpower them, the "water" gag was a gag about Indy in pain, very dark humor that is consistent with Raiders.
I will admit that Spielberg threw a little too much humor in there, I think that was a mistake but the overall tone of the film is very serious and very adult. Temple is about the cult and mature themes like black magic, the occult and child slavery. Crusade on the other hand is more of a spoof, the quest doesn't really matter, the kiddie humor like the Micky Mouse joke was all that mattered in Crusade and it failed miserably.

But the voodoo doll complete with exact Indy hat and coat was silly.
Willie's reaction to the temple was completely understandable considering she had never been in that situation
But the whole point of her screaming and whining was for comic relief which contradicts your point about it being very dark and serious from the 50 minute mark.
don't see a problem with the lava not melting metal
Me neither, all the movies are far fetched and ridiculous but it's not very serious is it?
the Thuggees were attacked by hundreds of kids it makes sense that they would overpower them
To the sound of cutesy Disney music that again contradicts your very serious point. What excuse have you got for the Thuggees conveniently becoming villains from an Abbott and Costello movie so Short Round can beat the crap out of them without hardly touching them? Willie and Short Round acting out Indy's punches, Willie falling into the mine cart, mallet on thuggee's head. You try to exaggerate ONE mention of Mickey Mouse in Last Crusade and desperately try to downplay all the slapstick in this.
the "water" gag about Indy in pain, very dark humor that is consistent with Raiders
This isn't even worth a reply.

No, Raiders never had "very dark" humour like that. The "water"-gag is instead perfectly consistent with "very dark" humour from movies such as
                                The Gold Rush
                                City Lights
                                Modern Times
                                The Great Dictator
                                which are all
                                extremely
                                dark films by your standard.
Here's also a very dark snippet, if you can bear it:
Deriving humour from the pain of cats and mice, appalling.

What annoyed me more than the lava not melting metal though (despite this being my favorite scene in the movie anyway) is how the guy who was sacrificed bursts into flames well before he reaches the lava (which probably would happen) but then when the annoying shrieking willie gets lowered down shes lowered way closer to the lava and doesn't catch on fire, did spielberg overlook that or did he just not care I wonder either way it was kind of stupid. I just watched this last night after not having seen it for a long time and I didn't realize how the movie is just a series of "close calls" strung together almost like how Gravity is just one perilous situation after another and it gets tired and predictable. Aside from its shortcomings though it is my favorite IJ movie, I don't get the love for Raiders to be honest, it was probably very new and fresh in its day but Ive always found it tedious and boring. I'll start watching it when its on as I want to for some reason like the movie but I always tune out around an hour or so in and watch something else.

How many times have you seen this movie you seem to be trying to pretend you don't like?

This was made at a time when his wife and Ford's wife divorced them. He was pretty pissed off and so that is what led him to make this dark film. Comedic/action were always the elements he put in his movies.

I think this is overlooked because people THINK it's supposed to be. It's offensive, Willie screams too much, Short Round beats up bad guys etc
It's actually just as good as Raiders, Indy is far more entertaining, the Temple itself is fantastic. After recently watching them all, I'd say TOD, Raiders and then TLC. I won't even bring up that disaster of recent memory. The Cinematography is way better here as well. It's the most Polished of the Trio

This movie is the kind of thing Spielberg grew up watching. Serial cliffhangers that kids would go watch at theatres.
It's not supposed to be Saving Private Ryan or Schindler's List. It's supposed to be a fun, entertaining, action adventure movewhich is exactly what it is, and then some.
