The voodoo doll was a mature theme, Willie's reaction to the temple was completely understandable considering she had never been in such a situation, don't see a problem with the lava not melting metal, this is the same franchise where a box of sand melted people's faces (not to mention the fact that India isn't volcanicly active so therefore the lava had to have been created from black magic), the Thuggees were attacked by hundreds of kids it makes sense that they would overpower them, the "water" gag was a gag about Indy in pain, very dark humor that is consistent with Raiders.
I will admit that Spielberg threw a little too much humor in there, I think that was a mistake but the overall tone of the film is very serious and very adult. Temple is about the cult and mature themes like black magic, the occult and child slavery. Crusade on the other hand is more of a spoof, the quest doesn't really matter, the kiddie humor like the Micky Mouse joke was all that mattered in Crusade and it failed miserably.

But the voodoo doll complete with exact Indy hat and coat was silly.
Willie's reaction to the temple was completely understandable considering she had never been in that situation
But the whole point of her screaming and whining was for comic relief which contradicts your point about it being very dark and serious from the 50 minute mark.
don't see a problem with the lava not melting metal
Me neither, all the movies are far fetched and ridiculous but it's not very serious is it?
the Thuggees were attacked by hundreds of kids it makes sense that they would overpower them
To the sound of cutesy Disney music that again contradicts your very serious point. What excuse have you got for the Thuggees conveniently becoming villains from an Abbott and Costello movie so Short Round can beat the crap out of them without hardly touching them? Willie and Short Round acting out Indy's punches, Willie falling into the mine cart, mallet on thuggee's head. You try to exaggerate ONE mention of Mickey Mouse in Last Crusade and desperately try to downplay all the slapstick in this.
the "water" gag about Indy in pain, very dark humor that is consistent with Raiders
This isn't even worth a reply.

No, Raiders never had "very dark" humour like that. The "water"-gag is instead perfectly consistent with "very dark" humour from movies such as
        The Gold Rush
        City Lights
        Modern Times
        The Great Dictator
        which are all
        extremely
        dark films by your standard.
Here's also a very dark snippet, if you can bear it:
Deriving humour from the pain of cats and mice, appalling.

What annoyed me more than the lava not melting metal though (despite this being my favorite scene in the movie anyway) is how the guy who was sacrificed bursts into flames well before he reaches the lava (which probably would happen) but then when the annoying shrieking willie gets lowered down shes lowered way closer to the lava and doesn't catch on fire, did spielberg overlook that or did he just not care I wonder either way it was kind of stupid. I just watched this last night after not having seen it for a long time and I didn't realize how the movie is just a series of "close calls" strung together almost like how Gravity is just one perilous situation after another and it gets tired and predictable. Aside from its shortcomings though it is my favorite IJ movie, I don't get the love for Raiders to be honest, it was probably very new and fresh in its day but Ive always found it tedious and boring. I'll start watching it when its on as I want to for some reason like the movie but I always tune out around an hour or so in and watch something else.

How many times have you seen this movie you seem to be trying to pretend you don't like?

This was made at a time when his wife and Ford's wife divorced them. He was pretty pissed off and so that is what led him to make this dark film. Comedic/action were always the elements he put in his movies.

I think this is overlooked because people THINK it's supposed to be. It's offensive, Willie screams too much, Short Round beats up bad guys etc
It's actually just as good as Raiders, Indy is far more entertaining, the Temple itself is fantastic. After recently watching them all, I'd say TOD, Raiders and then TLC. I won't even bring up that disaster of recent memory. The Cinematography is way better here as well. It's the most Polished of the Trio

This movie is the kind of thing Spielberg grew up watching. Serial cliffhangers that kids would go watch at theatres.
It's not supposed to be Saving Private Ryan or Schindler's List. It's supposed to be a fun, entertaining, action adventure movewhich is exactly what it is, and then some.

                      It's not trash. It's a fun film.
