It was a joint Russian-Cuban operation with the Cubans very much the junior partner. In the remake the North Koreans invaded (again with Russian help) but took a leading role which I found to be more ridiculous than Cubans invading. Cuba at least lies ninety miles off the coast. The North Koreans would have no way to move their military across the ocean.

it's funny that it is viewed as a republican film when republicans are the only ones back then knowing how this could never happen.

John Milius did write and direct it so it probably deserves that reputation. It probably wasn't intended to depict what he thought was a realistic threat. It's a political-fantasy film about fighting commies with your buddies.

Don't forget the Nicaraguan army, they were also part of the invading force - all 200 of 'em! lol…. I was a teenager back then and, yes, some people really thought "Red Dawn" was a possibility and that we needed to arm right-wing terrorists i.e., Contra rebels, in Nicaragua OR ELSE the commies were going to march up through Central America and Mexico and invade the US of A!! Of course, the ragtag Nicaraguan army was no match for the Mexican army, let alone the Honduran army, so I doubt they'd make it very far but that didn't stop the red-baiters and commie haters from believing that the worst was possible.

the commies were going to march up through Central America and Mexico and invade the US of A!!
If they pulled that off they would have gone down in history like Hannibal crossing the Alps.
