Cold War propaganda film. Ridiculous but entertaining. Russia, Cuba and Nicaragua invade the US and take over some small town in the Midwest. OK, first of all, how could the tiny rinky-dink Nicaraguan military invade America from the South? They'd have to first get through Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and a little country called Mexico before invading the US. Seems more than unlikely. Secondly, WHY would Nicaragua invade the US? At the time (early 80s), that nation was focused on building a socialist revolution within its own borders but never had any designs on any neighboring country and couldn't afford to wage war on another country, let alone the United States. Say what you will about Daniel Ortega and the Sandinista government, they never behaved aggressively toward any of their neighbors.
Red Dawn is right-wing fantasy but it helped to bolster Reagan's illegal support for the Contra rebels in Nicaragua and convince a portion of the American public that Communism was the ultimate evil (even though it was a paper tiger by that point).
