Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Sixteen Candles

    mm19765 — 10 years ago(February 07, 2016 08:55 PM)

According to this theory from TVTropes.com. Here's what it says:
The fact is, Both characters are played by Molly Ringwald and both films are set in the same universe, according to the late John Hughes. So think about it, after the end of Sixteen Candles, Jake Ryan probably said to himself, "Why would I bother to date Samantha knowing I will be graduating in a few months and most likely will be attending college when she still has two years of high school?" Soon after, Jake abruptly broke up with Samantha and got back together with Caroline. Samantha, devastated and enraged, didn't want to be reminded of Jake or the breakup anymore and ran away from home and, along the way, met Mr. and Mrs. Standish, who surprisingly decided to take the distraught young lady in and accepted her as their daughter. After being welcomed into the Standish family, Samantha chose to block out all memories of her real family and Jake Ryan and took on the persona of prissy rich girl, Claire Standish, got enrolled at Shermer High School in Shermer, Illinois, started to skip classes in favor of going shopping, got put in detention on a Saturday with four other students and the rest is history.
So guys, what are all your thoughts on this? I personally don't believe it but what about you guys? Let me know.
"Creation is an act of sheer will. Next time, it will be flawless." - John Hammond (Jurassic Park)

This would mean that Farmer Ted became Brian Johnson.
Caroline was the prom queen in Sixteen Candles, but then Samantha aka Claire became the prom queen the following year.
There are some strange phenomena at work in Shermer, Illinois. Shermer High had a guy on the wrestling team who had been working as a Repo Man in L.A. the previous year, and was last seen in a Chevy Malibu going into outer space. Then there was a girl who was a "basket case," yet she was a known associate of a dangerous computer hacker in Seattle. And he also mysteriously showed up in Shermer a year later.

Nah, Shermer IL. is just populated with a LOT of white people. Eventually you're going to come across a few that look alike. Ted the geek looks like Brian from the Breakfast Club who also happens to look very much like Gary from Weird Science. Same goes for Sam/Claire, hell they probably were in some of the same classes togetherimagine the confusion.

And Sam/Claire looked like Andie Walsh.

I don't think that when John Hughes said that all his movies are in the same universe did he necessarily mean the characters were the same people just because they were played by the same actors and actresses. However, some of his characters ARE the same. His '88 movie 'She's Having a Baby' includes a cameo by Ferris Bueller and John Candy/Dan Aykroyd as the characters from 'The Great Outdoors'. And I like to think that Kevin Bacon's cameo in 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' is the same character he plays in 'She's Having a Baby'. So the universe is more connected than we thought, but Molly Ringwald is not playing the same character throughout.

OrPerhaps Shermer, IL. is the nexus point of the multiverse.

Yes, I think it is, as it is recurring throughout numerous Hughes films.

Sounds like flawless logic to me.

All possible Mollys exist in the Hughes universe simultaneously until the collapse of the wave function. She's just a hussy who needs to settle down, right?

After destroying his parents house and his father's Rolls, Jake was disowned. So he got a mohawk, bought a motorcycle and moved to Spokane to be a high school wrestler. Oh, and he changed his name to Kuch.
