We're not talking about "Yeah, they're kinda older, aren't they?"
We're talking about nearly a quarter century. Remember how much Paul Newman aged between
    The Hustler
    and
    The Color of Money
? Going from the new talented hot young kid to being the grey haired old warhorse? We're just two years away from having the same time passage since
    Streets of Fire
that Newman had there. That one worked because A) the sequel only carried forward the one compelling character that you wondered about; and B) the original movie depicted a self-destructive talent as the main protagonist, which opened the door for a sequel about his redemption.
In this case you have neither of those things going for you. As much fun as this movie was, there wasn't any one single compelling character that makes you wonder: How did they turn out as a middle-aged man / woman? Also, since SoF finished with an upbeat, good-guys-win ending, there isn't a lingering story of redemption here that's waiting to be told.
Assembling the whole old cast of characters (or even a good percentage of them) would come across feeling very forced and contrived at this point. I mean, what are you going to do? Have Billy and Ellen's teenage kid get kidnapped by Raven, I suppose, for some long simmering revenge .. so naturally they track down the now 50-ish run-down ex-mercenaries Cody and McCoy as the "best people" to get the kid back? I don't think so.
And all of that is ignoring the practical issues. This was one of those rare movies that cast almost entirely near-unknowns at the time .. and had a whole bunch of them go on to become much more prominent. It would cost a comparative fortune just to reassemble this cast again at today's going rates for their services. I don't see a sequel to
    Streets of Fire
being considered sure fire enough at the box office to convince any studio to give it a big enough budget for that to happen.

It's a nice idea but unlikely, especially with the same cast.
The original budget of "STREETS OF FIRE" was $14 million I believe.
DIANE LANE alone gets $6 million a movie now.
BILL PAXTON and WILLEM DAFOE wouldn't come cheap either.

It's amazing to see the difference between the trajectories of the three main characters: Diane Lane (HUGE,) Michael Pare (GONE,) and Rick Moranis (NOTHING OF LATE, BUT A DOZEN GOOD MOVIES AFTER STREETSAnd before, does anybody remember him in John Wayne's The Cowboys?)
Da Foe is a major commodity in Hollywood these days. Bill Paxton less so, but is still enjoying a nice career. Amy Madigan has evolved into an actress tackling much more serious roles.
Didya notice a couple of the bit players? Rick Rossovich as the young cop? He of Roxanne and a some other decent roles. Ed Begley Jr as the crazy guy who has a couple of lines in the street?
You could do Streets of Fire 2, but it would never work. One of the main reasons the movie was so good was that Walter Hill was at his PEAK and he made a hell of a movie. I'm not sure what he's doing these days.
Think Basic Instinct 2, and all the other bad sequels that are made many years after the original.
The exception to this is Aliens, which is almost as good as the first. Godfather 2 also, but that came only a couple of years after the first.

Rick Moranis wasn't in The Cowboys. That was Robert Carradine (Revenge Of The Nerds).

"Rick Moranis (NOTHING OF LATE, BUT A DOZEN GOOD MOVIES AFTER STREETS"
5 years too late, but Rick Moranis retired for the most part in the 1990s after his wife died of cancer, leaving him with their very small children to raise. He's said after the first few years he realized he didn't enjoy making movies anymore.

It could be done today. Jessica Alba as Ellen Aim and Ashton Kutcher as Tom Cody.

FWIW, what were the plans for the aborted sequels? I am sure Walter Hill had some rough outlines in his head.

A second movie would be nice, but I'm not sure, what the story should about!Telling, what happened with Cody,McCoy and Ellen during the last 23 years????
I'm not sure, whether that would be so interesting.
I think,it could be interesting to make a movie with Lane and Pare.It would be nice to see them now so many years later working together again.Look at the team Gere-Roberts with 'Runaway Bride' or Bullock-Reeves with 'Lake House'.I would love to see Lane-Pare now working together again, too!

Because the actors now are older, much of the energy from the previous film would be all gone.

I say re-make it with a more in-depth script. Oh, and some amped up violence of course! I was watching the HD DVD last night and actually thought who would play what roles if it were re-vamped, and I too thought Mandy Moore could be Ellen. She wouldn't have to lip sync, that's for sure. Hartnett would be okay, maybe have Heath Ledger as DeFoe's character.
