Combating smash and grab

With smash & grab robberies on the rise I think it is time to use new tech to go old school. In the era before supermarkets all the product was behind the counter. You told the clerk what you wanted and they got it for you. Imagine a Walgreens. You walk in and the are a couple dozen kiosks. You walk up to one and can either type in what you want or virtually walk the isles just like in a video game. Once you have everything you want in your virtual cart you accept and pay. Behind the counter robots rapidly retrieve items to place in baskets as they race past on conveyors. As the baskets emerge from the stock area a clerk bags the order and gives it to the person with the matching reciept. There would also be a help desk with a person to answer questions and process returns etc. The general public would be unable to access the area containing the stores products.

I don't think these type of robots exist and if and when they do they would probably be very expensive.

Those type of robots DO exist. Hell I've seen them in soda machines. Put your money in type the product number and the robot grabs the correct soda and moves it to the dispensary chute.
