Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Silverado

There is a scene in Silverado where a hatless Costner attempts to mount his horse and gets carried a short distance clinging to the side of the saddle before getting in the saddle and singlehandedly chasing a group of fleeing bad guys before giving up the chase.
It appears to be a replica of the scene in The Magnificent Seven when a hatless Steve McQueen does the exact same thing, carried along by his horse until he got in the saddle to singlehandedly chase the Mexican bandits as they fled the village after their first battle with the Seven. IMO, the scenes are too similar to be coincidence. I'm guessing Kasdan did it as a tribute to McQueen.

That is the "Pony Express mount".
Hang a bit, straighten both legs, take a little hop and when you punch your feet to the ground you spring up and over the saddle. Sometimes guys do it with a sort of one,two and come up spread-legged.
      Either way is pretty cool.

Thete are many references/tributes to classic Westerns; the church from High Noon, the barroom from Dodge City (I kept waiting for the big brawl), etc., that I thinks it's justified to believe the McQueen tie-in. Anyone notice any others?

          Another "tribute to McQueen" scene.
Magnificent 7: Trapped in the room with the dying Harry, Vin takes the extra six-shooter he had and, running it dry, he just tosses it aside.
Silverado: As the three attack the ranch, Emmett dismounts, run up to the door and tosses away the empty spare six-shooter.
