I for one sure am glad they didn't have any kind of romantic scenes between them as it was not needed and they just seemed to be good friends as they both had similar likes and respect for each other. I liked the way it turned out

I'd simply say that the director has shown very clearly a relationship between Stella and Paden based on sympathy and mutual respect, without directly implying but without excluding other aspects.

They were good together. I didn't interpret their chemistry as romantic. It seemed too unlikely. But there was a hint of sexual interest between them. Very thought-provoking relationship to put on screen. Interesting and unusual. Linda Hunt was great as Stella. I need to see more of her performances.

It was exactly as you describe, not romantic, but just with a little bit of joking about it.
I'm glad that they didn't put a conventional love-interest in there that would've only served to confuse the relationship as something it wasn't.

Thanks for pointing out Linda Hunt's 'The Year Of Living Dangerously.' I hope to catch that some time.
