Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — 'Round Midnight

Wow, I loved this movie. Why aren't more movies like this being made? A movie that isn't ushered along by plot points, but just happens and still works. Like the early Wim Wenders movies
Probably plenty of movies like this have been made, but I don't know of all of them. They certainly don't seem to be present at the festival circuit today. I just saw "Edmond" and "Everything Is Illuminated," and "'Round Midnight" is everything those movies ain't.

One of the greats. There's nothing quite like this one. The shots came so well with the score. The acting was superb as well as the music. The very simple plot of friendship & love bonded by Dale & Francis' love for music was masterfully written with such triviality that made ths story very original & interestingly unique. I wish to see more movies like these.

Agreed, this is an incredible film. I love the sequence at the end of the film when Herbie Hancock and the big band are at the ampitheatre in Lyon playing Chan's Song, when suddenly it shifts back in time to when Dale is playing the tune at the club on 52nd street and shifts forward again to see Francis watching one of his super 8 film's of Dale. The music and the performances and the imagery merge into an amazing emotional experience. It was one of the most moving sequences I've ever experienced on film. I can't believe it was only nominated for 2 Oscar's. Bertrand Tavernier should have won best director and Francois Cluzet should have at least been nominated for best supporting actor. But what does the Academy know?

The soundtrack of this movie was like one of my college soundtracks. I played the cassette so much, I wore out at least one.
Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

Agree with all the above comments. As a jazz buff, I absolutely adore this movie.

I think it's about time this movie moved to the front of my DVD rotation.
"Happiness is a wet Rico Reed". heh.

This is an OK movie - 6/10 - Long Tall Dexter's CD "The Other Side of Round Midnight" is great.
