This is what I have always thought was the reason for its perceived failure.
    High expectations.
I take that as a compliment for how highly it was regarded.

I don't know how highly anticipated this film was, but I like it. Sadly Tobe Hooper's three films with Cannon weren't hits, which is a shame because all three of them are fun ovies.
I have seen the original, but not in a while.

I actually love this movie. The only bad thing in it, is the horrible performance by the lead kid actor. Did Tobe Hooper owe Karen Black a favor or something??
BTW RIP Karen Black, loved ya while growing up in the late 70s.

I always thought this version was OK. It's a fun "B" type movie. As far as the original, for years I thought it was a great classic. I watched it again about a year ago and didn't think it was very good anymore. Honestly I don't think the original is any better than this version anymore.

Geez, the Martians, especially the leader of the bunch, look like characters from the kids TV show of yore, H.R. Pufnstuf by Sid and Marty Croft. The remake totally fails as a sci-fy horror movie by the standards of the original, and I mean
                TOTALLY
. The execution of the film, in nearly every respect, is like it was aimed for a 4 to 6 year old viewing audience

It was rated PG. It was a dark camp film aimed at kids a la The Goonies. Lighten up.

Wow, it was so highly anticipated that it opened at #7 opening week at the box office. Clearly the entire world was rushing to go see it.

Well if you ever have a chance to see the original you may understand.

if you watched the original this becomes almost unwatchable. but even if you didn't, the acting is pretty bad. a shame but hard to remake a classic from the 50s, ala, war if the world, time machine, etc.

                                I actually enjoyed the Movie.
It's definitely not 1 of My Favorite Movies but I still enjoyed it.
