I always thought it'd be neat to have a job like that, but what exactly did she do? And do those positions really exist?
It seems like she said she was a data transferer, but what does that mean? I've looked up all the positions in a bank, and couldn't find one that looked similar to hers. All I could find are, Tellers, Loan Officers, Financial Advisors and things like that.

im not sure, tbh when you think about it there will still be jobs like that because everything is basically done online now BUT I assume back then you did not need a ton of experience OR grades etc to do the job and was just trained to do it, im only going on the people we see in jumpin jack flashthey all seemed like they would not have gone to uni or collage to train for that job haha
BUT I did like how they could wear what ever they wantedI hate uniforms -

She was, more or less, a data entry operator. Banks used to call this position a "lockbox" operator but it is pretty much data entry. I did it for 5 years, though not for a bank. I did know a couple of people who did it though. It is a VERY boring, tedious, and repetitive job and it does not pay very much. A lot of banks have automated that job so there aren't nearly as many as there once were. I do remember, however, that lockbox positions were usually in the evenings, not during the day. You would go to work around three o'clock in the afternoon and work until around midnight. Hence, I never applied for one as I had an 0830-1700 day job.

Thanks, is it similar to being a secretary? I just looked up the job des. and it said lockbox operators do things like sort mail, put into categories and things like that.

I suppose you could say that. It is a clerical job so some of the duties would overlap with that of a secretary. You could be sorting mail and checks, scanning them into an imaging system, and what not. If you have any 10 key skills, that is the main qualification. Most banks would want at least 9K keystrokes per hour (kph). All is takes is practice. I could do 14K kph when I was 20 years old but most places won't require that much.
You are unlikely to get on with a bank or financial institution directly. They usually go through temporary agencies like Adecco or Manpower for these jobs nowadays. They do sometimes hire you on directly after temping for a while. At the CPA firm I worked at, I temped for a good 8 or 9 months working very hard before finally being hired directly by the firm.
I did it for 5 years but like I said, I worked for an accounting firm doing it so I was Monday-Friday 8-5, steady work, and the pay was above average at this particular firm along with excellent benefits and a generous vacation plan. So all of that outweighed the boredom of the position.
Although not as numerous as in the past, these jobs still exist. The pay isn't that great, maybe $12-13/hr. depending on your geographic region (I'm assuming you are in the States, have no idea about other countries). But it is an easy job for the most part, just boring and like I said, the schedules aren't ideal if you like a Monday through Friday 8-5. You likely would have to work during the day on weekends and then work 3 days during the week when you go to work around 2 or 3 in the afternoon and work until 11 or 12 at night (if you work for a bank)
If you are really interested in it, check around with some temp agencies - that is, if you have the 10 key skills. If it is for a bank, know that you must have a SPOTLESS police record and they will probably require passing a credit check as well. -
It sorta appeals to me for some reason and it did back when I was little and saw this movie.
