People above 30, Why you didn't watch Labyrinth at theaters?

I was four. I may have gone, but wouldn't remember. Earliest movie I really remember seeing in theaters was Back to the Future 2 and Ghostbusters 2 (both 1989).
Love Labyrinth though. It's a hoot. Henson magic can't be beat. -

In '86 my girlfriend and I were 20 when we went to see it in the theatre. We thoroughly enjoyed it and were surprised that it didn't do better at the box office. We correctly predicted it would catch on when it came out on cable and video.

I DID see it in the theater!!! I was stationed in Newport RI and saw "Labyrinth" during it's first run at the Jane Pickens theater in the heart of downtown (http://www.janepickens.com/. Escher, Henson, Bowie, Goblinswhat's not to like? I was 28. I bought the video soon after and picked up a copy of the dvd today for a young guest- he's nine. Even amongst my 20 and 30-something relatives, this film is a huge favorite. I don't understand why it didn't do better initially, nor why it remains such a hidden treasure. To me it remains PURE magic, even nearly 30 years after the film first hit theaters.

The climate for films and audiences was different in the 1980s. Being a fantasy nut wasn't "cool" at the time, plus it wasn't advertised that well. There also just wasn't a big demographic for young adults going to go see fantasy films like there is now. All the kids old enough to have driver's licenses were off to the latest Arnold or Stallone film.

I was only 7 when Labyrinth was released. I don't remember seeing too many movies at that age in the theater. I think I started going to the movie theater around age 10. I do remember watching it on VHS about a million times though as soon as it left the theater.
As one poster noted, it was kind of a different time. My parents didn't take us to the movies that much. They probably thought it was too expensive, even though it costs way more today. Movie prices seem to have increased faster than inflation. In the 1995-1997 time frame I remember going to see a movie at night (non-matinee) costing $5.25 or $5.50. Now it costs around $10.25 but adjusting for inflation it should only be around $8.25. And popcorn and drinks were MUCH cheaper 20 years ago. Those prices have almost quadrupled.

I saw it at the movies when I was 12. It was a double feature with Dark Crystal. My big sister took me for a matinee. She was bored and fell asleep (she was 22 at the time and could care less lol) I was dazzled! I loved both movies. I'm now a mom of two teen boys, and we STILL watch them lol. I can't wait to someday watch them with my grand babies

No idea. I don't even remember it being at the cinema.
I was six at the time, and found this film by accident on television. Before that I'd not heard of it.
Maybe they just didn't advertise the film well enough. -

I first recall seeing Labyrinth when it first came out on VHS so I took a look at boxofficemojo to see when it originally ran in theaters and figure out what I was doing at that point in my life. turns out Labyrinth only ran for three weeks from June to July in 1986 - a very short run.
During the summer of '86, I was twenty-one. I had my first professional job (a college internship paying little more than minimum wage), I was subleasing an apartment for the summer so I had my first real bills, and my first serious GF. Looking at the list of movies released in 1986, I realized that I didn't see a single movie released that summer until they later hit VHS. I suspect that my tight financial situation precluded me from going to the movies that summer. -

I did get to see it in theaters! I got taken to see it for my 7th birthday. I don't recall commercials or ads for it though. I fell in love with the movie immediately and it remains my all-time favourite to this day!

I was newly married, almost 22, and my husband and I saw it with another couple because we were all Muppet Show and Jim Henson fanatics! The movie did not disappoint us either. It's still one of my top 5 favorites! I think at the time it was not marketed to its full potential. And the Muppets were only big with a select few. Before ComicCon became really big and mainstream. My group was ahead of their time in the 80s.

I saw it in the theatre & I LOVED it! I thought it was so cool and so did my friends & family. I don't remember it being unpopular at the time - mildly popular - not a blockbuster, but not a dud.
When this was released, I was about 15 years old.Be excellent to each other!

Maybe because we either could not afford it, or, it just did not show in theaters around their area(Mainly mine, for sure, or my dad would have taken me.), and my dad, who is a Vietnam Vet, loved this movie, as well, which, he does NOT like cartoons, so, that in itself should tell you, how great a movie this really was, and same goes for "The Dark Crystal"!
