I was confused about the movie being on the Vatican Film List when the Cardinal is a negative character. The movie portrays the Church as corrupt and evil. My fanatic aunt (who read the Cataschim twenty times) says that the movie points out that Gods plan is perfect but his followers are not.

The Vatican never states that all Cardinals are good people or that there has never been corruption in the Church.
The Cardinal realized he was wrong by the end of the movie (and I think he knew it was wrong the whole time which was why he kept trying to justify his actions to himself.) -

That was your interpretation of the Cardinal?
I don't think he was a negative character nor was he corrupt and evil. Instead he was pragmatic. He had to make a tough choice it is blatant in the movie. Either the mission gets destroyed or the entire church in Europe. He hated his decision and based on his letter to the Pope in the beginning and his "thus have we made the world, thus have I" at the end I don't think he ever forgave himself for it. -

he walked the wrong way!if he had just led the indians around the house and through the forest, then they all might have lived.but noooo! i gusse its only fair that he die to,since all the other priests did.
the first 3/4 of this movie is boring and in the last 1/4 everyone gets shot!!!
although the begginig was very touching.seeing all that the priest did to get to the indians to teach them about christianity.
spelling is overated -

didn't hear what altamirano said at the end?
he said something like 'i left survived, but in fact it's me who's dead, and them who's living. becuz the dead spirit lives forever in the memories of the living'
if father Gabriel fought hard like others, well, this story would've been one of millions of fights happened in the world. but because he chose the means of peace to fight against enemy, this event remains as one shining demonstration of what is truly stronger: the sword for victory or the spirit for peace
yes, he and his followers didn't survive the massacre. but what he did remains forever in other people's memories because of the spirit he chose. -

Stupid like Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King. Gosh, those guys didn't know WHAT they were doing. Your observation is indicative of all the people who failed to 'get' this movie and its message. The music and scenery/landscape is incredibly well done. I'm actually glad that this movie is lost on most people, it would devalue the message if everyone agreed with you and completely missed the point.

This is a very old thread and you may never see this reply, BUT:
Not me; Father Gabriel taught these indigenous people his beliefs and they accepted them and looked to him for example; he lived among them and came to love and respect them and they him. Even if they had run, most would have been mercilessly hunted down. He could not save them, but he could die with them, maybe feeling that if the Europeans among whom were him and his priests had never come, the indigenous people would have lived unmolested. It is possible that there were priests who honestly and misguidedly thought they were leading the indigenous people to God instead of being used as a vehicle of imperialism. They did not have our hindsight. I know it is unpopular these days, but "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." There are still a few who understand that concept. This monk was truly Christlike.
Father Gabriel and the native children who save what they can of the legacy that was left to them are my favorite characters in the movie. If only all priests were like Father Gabriel.
Actually, SeverusSnape38, your quotation at the bottom is the perfect embodiment of Father Gabriel. Your English needs work, but maybe it's not your first language.

Well said. Since this is a very old thread I can't say why I misspelled stuff because I don't remember.
if you aren't willing to die for what you believe in then there's no point for you to believe in anything
