I love this film for many reasons, but one is the subtle direction and camera work.
===SPOILER===
In the latish scene where Tampopo and Gor are sitting in a restaurant, Tampopo is trying to deepen the relationship while Gor is getting restless to move on. Some of the scene is shot unusually with their backs to the camera. Then a train goes by outside the window and Gor follows it with his eyes the symbolism is subtle enough I only noticed it on a second viewing.
