I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned Leonard Nimoy, DeForrest Kelly, or James Doohan.
I thought of those as well but as Trekkies we can hardly call them "guest stars" special appearances would be a better definition in their cases.

That sounds like a reasonable explanation. Although no matter what you call them I believe they deserve mention. I thought James Doohan in particular was outstanding in his "special appearance".
