They considered him to be the weak link in their organization. They couldn't trust him not to rat on them if he was caught.

They used him as their fall guy. It's explained in the movie. You frame Cain and then kill Cain and Cain's the alphabet bandit, case closed, the police are off the case and you get away scott free.

Best way to get away with any crime is to cut off your connection to it. Cain was. He willingly participated, but he was used like everyone else.
