Why did Joker admit that he made the John Wayne comment to Hartman?

I always thought that this was a very stupid thing to do because neither Sgt Hartman or the other DI's had seen Joker made the John Wayne joke and they didnt know who had spoken out of turn at all, Hartman was just going to blame the guy next to Joker or someone else so there was no reason to speak up and confess by saying "I said it sir." and draw attention to himself.
Joker could have easily gotten out of it and avoided getting his nickname and Hartmans wrath and the punch to the stomach, the downside was that the platoon might have turned against him for pissing Hartman off with his John Wayne joke and not confessing it but then again most guys just would not care.
I certantly would never make that John Wayne joke if i was in The Marines, but if i did i would never confess to it if the DI had not caught me in the act, Hartman had no way to know who made the joke after all, its not like Joker was friends with anyone or cared about them yet after just starting training, it was a nice way for a Draftee to screw with the macho DI's and have fun at their expense though. -

As you said, if Joker had remained silent and another recruit, or even the whole platoon, had been punished for Joker's remark, he could have made enemies among the recruits. He was smart enough to know that.
Also, he had guts, and guts is enough.
Fowler's knots? Did you say fowler's knots?
