as a Christmas movie?
Dont get me wrong, I enjoy the classics too. Well, a few anyway. Its a Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Christmas Story.
But Less Than Zero has always been a holiday film to me as well. -

While it does not have that Xmas feel to it the period allows families that are spread out around the country to congregate together.
I guess the other thing that seems strange to many people is the weather especially if you've grown up in the Nothern Hempisphere. I'm based in the UK so I expect cold Xmases but I gre up in Perth Western Australia where the weather is completetly different - too hot at times to cook a meal indoors for Xmas day. -

That's probably why Xmas sucks in California; no snow! I lived out there for over 10 years and worked them instead and gave people with families the day!
