    Spoilers of Course
Max's ultimate plan was to turn both Michael and Sam into vampires so Lucy would have no choice but to join them (not a bad plan actually). However, earlier in the film Star tells Michael she was supposed to kill him on David's orders (her first kill) but couldn't. If Max is the head vampire and directing David and the others in accordance with his grand scheme why would David want Star to kill Michael?

I think Michael was supposed to be Star's first "turn".

        Jealousy?
If Max wanted the boys and Lucy as his sort of 'undead family' where would that leave David, who up til that point was the 'oldest son' as it were?

I don't think Max had decided to try to win Lucy at the point in the film when Star was supposed to have killed Michael.

On my closed captioning, Star said "It is what David wanted".
I saw this post right before watching it when it came on about 2 hours ago.
What I don't get is that Michael drank David's blood, so David is the one who turned (or tried to turn) Michael.
Why did it take Max's death to turn him back human?

                It was Max's blood.

Because Max was the head vampire. If you kill the head vampire, all half vampires turn backing into humans

Well, even if that was Max's plan all along, David being the ultimate rebel would obviously have no problem disobeying his master's orders. And why would he do it? Jealously is a good enough reason, I think.
David simply didn't like Michael from the very beginning and it's possible he wanted to mess with him for fun.
You want something corny? You got it!

Max hadn't decided to win over Lucy when Star was first tasked with killing Michael on David's orders. Star was luring Michael in to kill him, when she hopped on the bike with Michael she was gonna kill him when they got alone.
However at that point Max had just informed David and the gang about his plan and that he needed Michael to be turned not killed. So right when Star hops on the bike with Michael, David and the gang immediately interrupt to stop her from killing him. Thats how i always saw it as anyways, David wanted Star to kill Michael until Max informed him of his plan and David had to hurry and stop Star from riding off with Michael, thats why they pull up so quick.
Thats what i love about these high school girls, i get older they stay the same age.

Throughout the movie, we learnt that Star was a half-vampire as well as Laddie & Michael. I'm guessing for Star to turn fully into a vampire, David wanted Michael to be Star's first victim
